Elmali Turkey
Along the Mediterranean coast of Turkey the roads are often spectacular. Driving southwest from Antalya towards Finike and Kas you can see some striking scenery. This stretch of road is well known to visitors who frequent this part of Turkey, and with good reason. The weather is nice year round and the views are often breathtaking. The small towns are nice and there are plenty of beaches to find a quiet place to enjoy the sun and sea. From Finile, though, is another route that is less traveled, but has lots to offer those who choose to take it.
Heading north towards Elmali takes visitors off the beaten path and provides some time away from the crowds. There are several sites with old ruins and archeological interest, most notably at Limyra and Arykanda. Dating from at least 400 BC, there are temples, pillars and tombs to see and it is a beautiful setting.
Farther up the road, off a tricky turnoff, is Arkanda, an enormous archaeological site which dates to 1500 BC. Most the ruins are from the Roman times in the first century and later, though. There are bathhouses with several large mosaics, as well as Roman theaters and buildings. It is an ideal place for a history buff to spend a day or more.
At the end of the road is Elmali, a town that is known for its Ottoman architecture. There are a number of old homes as well as the old mosque in the town center for visitors to admire. This little side road offers visitors to Turkey a bit of history and Turkish culture to go with the sun and water that draws so many people here.
